World Poker Series History
- It has been said that an inveterate gambler named Nicholas Dandolos, most popularly known as Nick the Greek, approached Benny Binion the owner, to challenge the best poker players in a high-stakes poker marathon. Benny accepted the challenge to set up a match, and a match between Dandalos and the legendary Johnny Moss was played for public viewing.
The marathon lasted for five months, and these two men played every form of poker game that you can think of. In this poker marathon, Moss won the biggest game with estimated winnings of $2 million. After the game, Dandalos stood up from his chair and bowed politely. Then, he said the now famous words, “Mr. Moss, I have to let you go.”
Benny Binion had never forgotten the five-month marathon. He was inspired by it because of how the public had gathered outside the casino during the marathon everyday to watch the game. He was amazed about what had happened, and that gave him the drive to decide to recreate the excitement and stage a battle of poker giants, and this is how the World Poker Series started.
- Many of the best players in the country were inspired by what they had witnessed, and in 2004, hundreds of players from all around the world participated in this series. Every year, the World Poker Series starts with a $10,000 no limit hold’em Main Event.
As of 2014, the World Poker series already had 65 events with major poker variants featured in the games. Traditionally, these events are held in a day or several consecutive days from June to July.
In the beginning, the champion was chosen through a popular vote. However, it was determined through the so-called freeze-out competition that players should be systematically eliminated until one player stands with all the chips. Again, Johnny Moss was declared to be the World Champion. Later, it was passed on to Thomas Preston, who is also famous as Amarillo Slim, and after winning the title, he began to gain a wider following.
In 1971, the event had been offering tournaments with amazing cash prizes. In the next two years, they added a five-card stud event. In 1972, the Main Event of the series became the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament. The winners of this event not only get the largest prize of the tournament and a gold bracelet, but their photos will also be placed in the Gallery of Champions at Binion’s.
During the early 1980s, they introduced satellite tournaments, which allow people the opportunity to win in different varieties of events in the series. They were then able to gain over 2,100 participants for the series in 1987.
In 2006, the Poker Series had 45 events and covered the majority of poker variants. Later, they had 8,773 players competing in the tournaments and games of the series.
During the 2006 Main Event, Jamie Gold won what was then the largest single poker tournament ever, with estimated winnings of $7.5 million. In the 2010 Main Event, the winner received around $9 million.
- In 2011, it was officially announced that special fundraising events in the World Poker Series would be permitted. On July 1, 2012, there was this event called The Big One for One Drop, and it opened with a $1 million entry fee. This is the largest in poker history. All 48 available seats at this event were filled, and it resulted in a prize pool of $42,666,672.
The World Poker Series kept on growing in popularity. The number of participants kept on rising. A lot of poker players admit to this day that they are engrossed with the series of poker tournaments and some of the cash games in the event. These now include five-card stud, Texas Hold’em, deuce to seven low-ball draw, razz and seven card stud to name a few.

The largest non-Hold’em Tournament was the 2008 $50,000 HORSE with $7,104,000 and $1,989,120 in prizes.
